10 nights, flaky pastries, lavender ice cream dreams — and memories we’ll never forget.
Split, Croatia. If I could bottle the feeling from that holiday, I would. This was our first proper summer trip together — ten whole nights of sun, sea, snacks (a lot of snacks), and exploring one of the most charming cities on the Adriatic coast.
We booked an Airbnb just a five-minute walk from the Strip. It wasn’t flashy, but honestly, that didn’t matter. It was clean, quiet, had everything we needed, and we could wander to the sea or grab a cocktail in minutes. Sometimes it’s the simple ones that hit just right.
Split’s History (Just a Bit, Promise)
Before I get into the pastries, can we just appreciate how old this place is? Split is built around the remains of Diocletian’s Palace, which dates back to the 4th century. The Roman Emperor Diocletian actually retired here — I mean, if it’s good enough for an emperor…
Walking through the old town is like drifting through layers of time. You’ve got ancient stone walls, hidden courtyards, buzzing cafés tucked into old cellars, and laundry flapping over cobbled alleyways. It’s a living city, not a museum — and that’s what makes it feel so alive.
Eating Our Way Through Split (More Than Just Burek!)
We fell into a bit of a love affair with Bobis Bakery. These bakeries are all over town, and by day two, we were regulars. The bureks — oh my days. Flaky, warm, savoury… the kind of pastry that makes you go quiet while eating. I think I’d move to Split just to have that every morning.
One meal that really stood out was at Kavana Lvxor. It sits right on the main square in the old town, surrounded by ancient pillars and the hum of buskers and tourists. The food was solid, portions were decent, and we loved being able to sit outside and just soak in the buzz.
And then there was Brasserie on 7. I originally had it mixed up in my head, but let me set the record straight — it was lovely. The setting was classy but relaxed, right by the waterfront, and the food was genuinely great. Not bougie or trying too hard, just… pleasant in the best way. We had drinks, good service, and left smiling.
🌮 The Taco Tale
Okay, I’ve got to mention the tacos. We went to this one taco place (To Je Tako) that had a proper vibe — popular, buzzing, with a nice open layout and a crowd that told you it was the “place to be.” The tacos were great and we had a proper chilled-out evening there.
But — and here’s the funny bit — we actually stumbled across another taco spot earlier in the trip. Hidden deep in the maze of Split’s winding streets. I wish I could remember the name (trust me, I’ve tried!), but the food there was honestly next level. The tacos tasted fresher, and the staff were so friendly — just lovely people who seemed genuinely happy we were there. One of those little finds that stays with you.
A Little Nightlife and a Lot of Chill
We had a fun midweek night at X-Nightclub. Not wild, not dead — just a relaxed night out with good music, friendly staff, and a few cocktails. It was nice to be out without any pressure to “go hard.” We danced a bit, laughed a lot, and then strolled home under the stars. Simple pleasures.
Day Trips to Nature & Paradise
Plitvice National Park
This was probably the most jaw-dropping moment of the whole trip. We booked a guided tour to Plitvice Lakes through TripAdvisor, and it was beyond worth it. Picture waterfalls, wooden walkways over turquoise water, and mist in the trees. Pure magic.
You’re not allowed to swim there — they’re really protective of the ecosystem (fair enough). Our guide was brilliant though — knew all the best picture spots and made it easy to take everything in without stressing over the route.
Island-Hopping to Hvar (and Ice Cream Heaven)
We also did a 3-island boat tour, and hands down, Hvar stole the show. It’s just got that effortless charm. The stone streets, the little harbour cafés, the fresh air — and then there was the lavender ice cream. I’m honestly salivating typing this. It was sweet, floral, creamy… unlike anything I’ve ever tasted. I nearly cried when it was finished.
The Beaches: Pretty, but Pebbly
If you’re expecting golden sand and beach towels on soft shores — not quite. Split’s beaches are mostly pebbly or concrete platforms, and if you want a lounger, you’re either lucky or paying. We managed, but next time I’d probably plan around that a bit more. Bring water shoes if you’ve got sensitive feet.
🧳 Would I Visit Again?
Absolutely, yes. But next time, I’d split the trip (pun intended): spend a few nights in Split, then head over to Hvar Island for the rest. In summer, Split can get a bit hectic — buzzing with tourists and the nightlife crowd — so it’d be lovely to have a few calmer days in Hvar after soaking up the city vibes.
But overall? Split is a fantastic summer destination. The balance of history, good food, sunshine, and access to amazing nature makes it a winner. And we’ll always remember it as our first summer adventure together.
✈️ Travel Tips for Split, Croatia
- Card or cash? Card was fine almost everywhere. Some smaller shops and beach stalls might prefer kuna.
- Getting around: Walk the old town. Use Uber for longer trips — cheaper and reliable.
- Beach access: No sandy beaches really. Look for beach clubs if you want loungers and shade.
- Plitvice: Book ahead. Bring snacks and comfy shoes. And your camera.
- Boat trips: Easy to book near the marina or online. Ours was chilled and scenic.
- Language: Most people spoke English well. Everyone was friendly and helpful.
